At Acorn School, each month is a new adventure led by our wonderfully talented teachers. They guide our children through engaging lessons that allow homeschooling parents to actively observe and witness their children interacting with peers and teachers.
Here’s a peek at what we’ve been up to this month:
We were thrilled to launch our new Charlotte Mason-inspired Owls class for 6-12 year olds, led by the incredible Emily O’Brien.
This class began with an enchanting literary adventure through C.S. Lewis’s classic, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. The story of four siblings discovering a magical world captivated our young readers, sparking rich discussions and creative explorations.
As they dove into the novel, students engaged in complementary activities, from listening to Bach on the class record player to reciting poetry by Eugene Field, Walter de la Mare, and Robert Louis Stevenson. They also explored Van Gogh's masterpieces, such as The Starry Night and The Potato Eaters, seamlessly blending art and literature.
To further connect with the story, the children sampled teas and tried Turkish Delight, just like Edmund in Narnia. Their nature study focused on the sun, moon, and stars, complemented by folk stories and a lesson about Galileo’s telescope.
“The children filled their narration notebooks with pictures and copywork from the novel, as well as drawings from nature study. It was very lovely.” - Ms. Emily
We were delighted to see our Bluejay dive into a month full of creativity and hands-on learning, guided by the talented Patricia Benington.
The children had a blast baking carrot muffins, filling the room with the warm aroma of fresh treats. They also crafted beautiful embroidery projects and made their own dioramas, channeling their imaginations into miniature worlds.
“Speaking Spanish to them during the baking process is my favorite because they follow me beautifully without hesitation, learning without even thinking about it too hard. It has been a great month!” - Ms. Patti
This month has been a wonderful blend of creativity, skill-building, and language immersion. The children’s enthusiasm for each project, whether in the kitchen or the art studio, is truly inspiring.
Our little Cardinals and Hummingbirds classes have been filled with wonder and creativity this month. The children enjoyed stories about mermaids, ocean creatures, coral reefs, and friendly monsters, sparking their imaginations and curiosity.
Inspired by these tales, the children made their own fairy tents, baked carrot muffins, and crafted beautiful coral reefs with beeswax. They also explored their artistic side with watercoloring projects, while staying active with freeze dance and obstacle courses.
In addition to these creative activities, the children have been practicing our August song, "Little Acorn," written by their talented teacher, Ms. Olivia.
“During the last week of the month, we will be learning about thunder and lightning, enjoying our August birthday celebrations, and making some delicious strawberry snack mix.” Ms. Olivia
In addition to our regular classes, our monthly outings have brought so much joy to our entire community. From our beautiful Starlings dance classes led by Ms. Kailee to our #CampAcorn trip up to Flagstaff, the sense of unity and celebration within the Acorn School community is truly palpable. Thank you to all our members who make this community so special.
