February was a month of wonder, creativity, and heartfelt connections at Acorn School. From conversations about language and travel to intricate handwork projects and poetic discoveries, the children embraced each experience with enthusiasm.
Here’s a peek at what we were up to this month:
This month was made even more special as Ms. Pati returned to the Bluejays class! The children eagerly immersed themselves in a circle time practicing introductions, using vocabulary cards, and enjoying stories almost entirely in Spanish. They even took on the challenge of following handwork instructions in Spanish, adding a new layer of depth to their learning.
One of the most exciting lessons was the solar system study—everyone was bursting with facts and even attempted to say the planet names in Spanish! But the most treasured moments were during circle time when the children asked Ms. Pati about her own journey learning a second language. Their curiosity led to heartfelt conversations about the languages they dream of learning and the places they long to visit.
“I am so happy to be back with my Bluejays class this month!” - Ms. Pati
Though February ended, the warmth of Valentine’s Day lingered as the children exchanged beautifully crafted valentines. They poured their hearts into decorating their Valentine’s boxes with dried flowers, paper hearts, and watercolor paint, making each one a tiny work of art. Many spent hours at home creating their valentines, and their joy in giving was just as beautiful as their creations.
Beyond Valentine’s festivities, the children took on handwork projects requiring focus and patience. They finger-knitted bookmarks and crafted solar system decorations, embracing each challenge with determination.
"Some of them loved the finger knitting so much that they even started practicing at home" - Ms. Olivia
The Owls spent the month exploring the power of words, art, and music. They read A Wrinkle in Time, a book that sparked deep discussions and big ideas. Copywork became a mindful practice, allowing them to slow down and appreciate the rhythm and beauty of language.
In picture study, they were drawn into the landscapes of John Constable, while their composer study featured the works of Frederick Delius. Poetry study brought them the lyrical verses of Eugene Field, which quickly became a class favorite—his words seemed to dance off the page in a way that delighted them.
For nature study, the class began reading Thornton Burgess’ beloved animal stories. The children took to them right away, and with so much enthusiasm, they’ll be continuing the book next month!
“Our poet this month was Eugene Field - the children really enjoyed his work quite a bit, saying they liked the way the words sounded together.” - Ms. Emily
This month, we gathered at Mother Nature’s Farm for our Candlemas Festival, celebrating the halfway point between winter and spring. Our Charlotte Mason teacher read Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring during circle time, setting the tone for a joyful day of crafts, games, and songs to welcome the returning light.
For our monthly outing, families explored the beauty of the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens. With the sun shining and desert blooms beginning to appear, it was a perfect day to wander the trails, observe the native plants, and soak in the peaceful surroundings together.
