Hi! I’m Emily, a homeschooling mother, reading enthusiast, and indie children’s book author.

My background in the arts began as a young girl, when I enrolled in a liberal arts charter school at age 11. I studied creative writing and acting all through middle school, high school, and college.

When I first began homeschooling, I really wasn’t sure how I wanted to go about it. I bought a simple math curriculum and borrowed a friend’s Waldorf Essentials curriculum book. The Waldorf book had plenty of lovely work to do in it, but I quickly found that my son and I just wanted to read the stories. It was full of the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales. So I scrapped the rest of it and simply read the fairy tales aloud.

It was then that I realized the true power of storytelling and reading aloud to children. Immense growth, both intellectual and spiritual, can be experienced through great literature. I started learning about Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophy and it became the foundation of our learning experience.

I believe a great education must tend to both the mind and the heart, but perhaps the heart even more. Because if the heart cares, the mind will yearn to know. The heart motivates the mind to grow and expand on the ideas presented to it.

I put emphasis on literature, poetry, fine art, classical music, and deep connection with nature in my teaching because all those subjects inform the heart and soul. They help us to see and appreciate what is good, true, and beautiful in the world.

I’ve taught yoga for the last ten years and something I’ve always said to my students is this: if you cultivate peace inside yourself, you’re better able to bring more peace into the world. Well, I think the same is true here, with art. A person who spends time and attention on that which is lovely will create more of it. He will uplift humanity, whether through liberal arts or scientific discoveries or entrepreneurial endeavors…it all starts here.
